This recipe is the base for all the smoothies following. You can drink it as is or adapt it to one of the variations below. Note that this smoothie has no added sugar. I think it's plenty sweet, but feel free to add sweeteners if you like.
1 cup milk or milk substitute (soy milk, almond milk, etc.)
1 very ripe banana
1/4 cup almonds
Sprinkle of cinnamon
Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. If you like the crunch of the almonds, then blend a little less. Pour into a microwave safe cup and heat for 2 minutes. I use the microwave instead of the stovetop for 2 reasons: 1) The microwave causes the milk to get even frothier and 2) you don't have to worry about the milk curdling.
Some Cool (but not Cold!) Variations
- Chai Smoothie: proceed with recipe above but eliminate cinnamon. Put a chai teabag in the smoothie before you put it in the microwave. After heating, let the smoothie steep for a couple minutes to get the full spiciness of the chai.
- Hot Chocolate Smoothie: Add a teaspoon of cocoa (preferably unsweetened) before you heat.
- Smoothie Latte: Add a teaspoon of coffee before heating.
- Mocha Latte: Add 1/2 teaspoon each of coffee and cocoa before heating.
