About White Sugar and Flour
White--or refined--sugar and flour are highly processed items. Most of the nutrients in the sugar cane and wheat are stripped in the refining process and you are left with ingredients that have virtually no nutritional value. Foods heavy in white sugar and flour have high glycemic levels, causing the blood sugar to destabilize. Essentially, the blood sugar spikes and then crashes. This causes that familiar slump in energy, which leaves one fatigued and irritable. In addition, the blood sugar instability can cause more food cravings and, not surprisingly, weight gain.
