Five Days and Counting......
Hi everybody! I bet you've wondered why I haven't posted in so long. We're making a bar mitzvah....been kinda busy! Still busy, but really felt like sharing the experience with you. So, our oldest son, Binyomin (second in birth order), just turned 13 today (English birthday) and will be a bar mitzvah 17 Tammuz. It's cool that his actual bar mitzvah date is on Shabbos! Since Benny's bar mitzvah is at the start of the 3 weeks leading to Tisha B'av and we can't have a party during that time, we put it off 'til September. Though the Shabbos celebration is smaller, just for immediate family and community (the big shindig will be the September party), there is still a lot to do...but I really have to admit I am enjoying the process. Here's what our weekend will look like:
- Friday night dinner at our house (about 35 people)
- Shabbos morning services followed by a kiddush lunch
- Hang out at our house (and I hope I can grab a nap somewhere!)
- Shal Seudas for the ladies at my house; men and boys at shul
The first thing I did to organize myself was to make a schedule. Lately, I have really gotten into using Excel spreadsheets. Decided I would adapt one so I could pace myself. Admittedly, it took about 2 hours to do, but once I was done, I knew exactly what I had to cook, what ingredients to buy, when to buy them, when to cook or prepare the dishes, who's coming, what paper products we need, what we'll need to borrow (tables and chairs!), and so on. Here's the document below so you can see it.
Last week I bought all the paper goods and drinks. Also bought new suits for our younger boys (girls got new outfits about a month ago). This week, my husband will bar-b-que starting Thursday, some friends and I will make the salads on Thursday morning, and set the tables Thursday night, then Friday......b day!
Here's the menu for Friday night:
Appetizer: Gefilte Fish
Soup: Chicken soup
Main Course: BBQ steaks, hamburgers and chicken
Potato kugel (very kindly provided by our Rebbetzin)
Dessert: Doughnuts from Bagel Nosh (Lakewood--special request by Benny!)
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and Fudge brownies
No recipes in this post--just the process and some ideas how to get through it. Will bli neder post some of these recipes soon!
